Tarot: An artists' vision of the future

What happens when you ask an artist to predict his own future when presented with a Tarot card ? That's the question I've asked to 10 of the most talented comic and illustration artists of these times.

Sam Kieth, David Mack, Ashley Wood, Barron Storey, Jeff Faerber, Tin, Mike Dringenberg, Miran Kim, John Watkiss and Joshua Hagler all participated in this project

The result is a myriad of styles and themes, full with personal associations, interpretations, frustrations, creatuvity... but all generating superb and colorfull art.

Graphic Novel Art and Illustration House, a gallery in New York City, are pleased to present:

“Sequential Art: The Universal Language”

A special exhibition and sale of Flemish Cartoon and Comic art, which will run from July 16 to August 20, 2008.

The exhibition will present over 100 paintings, illustrations, comic strips and book art by the five selected artists debuting in the United States: Jan Bosschaert, “NIX”, Ilah, Judith Van Istendael, and Olivier Schrauwen.

Belgium is the historic cradle of European comics, and it still generates talented artists. The show provides an introduction to the wide variety of contemporary Flemish illustration and comic culture.

The current selection of artists, who have all been published overseas, range from paintings by Jan Bosschaert to the highly sarcastic comic strips of “NIX”. Ilah's character Cordelia would blend in nicely with the women of “Sex and the City”. Van Istendael's psychological narratives blend the illustration and comic book genres, and Schrauwen's work for “My Boy” shows that Europeans also find inspiration in American classics like Winsor McCay, but with their own peculiar viewpoint.

The opening will be held on Wednesday July 16, 2008 at Illustration House from 4:00 - 8:00 pm, and the artists will be present. Illustration House is located at 110 West 25 Street in the Chelsea district of Manhattan.

Paroles de Verdun - George and Barron conquer Europe !!!

One of the key objectives of Graphic Novel Art is to introduce American Graphic Novel Artists to the European public.

A couple of months ago I got into contact with Jean Wacquet from the European editing house Soleil (visit their site on http://www.soleilprod.com/index.php they are one of the -if not the - leading comic distributors of high quality comic books in Europe. Top series are Skydoll and Lanfeust a must for those willing to discover the top of modern European comics)

He was looking for US artists to contibute to the second volume of his series about the first Word War after a very successful first part "Paroles de Poulus". The book consists of several short stories based on letters written by soldiers during WWI.

I got Jean into contact with Barron Storey and George Pratt and now only a couple of months later the result is there. Next to some top European comic artists we have two top US artists contributing to this book, making this a truly international project.

You have no idea how happy I am that I was able to bring these people together

Very expressive, black and white (all pen and ink) work which just blew my mind away.

I just received some modifications Koak did to her first pages of Sickbed Blues. While the first pages were already superb, the latest adjustments allow litterally to flow from one page to the next without any stop !!!

Just superb !!!

This will be my next pet project, hopefully ready with a high quality teaser by San Diego 2007.

Graphic Novel Art Expo 2007 !!!

We're almost there !!!

Joe and Michael arrive next wednesday in Brussels and Teddy will fly in on Friday 11th of May.

We'll take our US guests first to Paris for two days of signings (4th and 5th of May) in the "Diable Blanc"

Then they are off to the flatlands of Holland to sign on sunday 6th of May in Breda - "De Dobbelsteen"

On Friday the 11th the full crew of 3 artists start their Belgian tour in Brussels - "Brusel" combined with a miniature exhibition, to be followed by the grand opening of the Graphic Novel Art Expo 2007 in "Mekanik" Antwerp on saturday 12th of May.

There will be more then 50 pieces of original art on display from our 3 top artists !!!

Finally, on sunday 13th of May, they will be signing at the Ganshoren comic festival before they return back home on the 14th.

Hope you'll be able to make it, if not we expect to have the new site www.graphicnovelart.com up and running again by the time of the opening.

Really happy with the first contact with the fans !!!

Barron was also on cloud 9 with his new baby - he always kept showing people the original journal and the printed version to prove how little difference there is.

Unfortunately my digital camera has issues, and I'm not able to show you pictures now... maybe in the near future.

Ready for APE !!!

It's almost 12pm, and need to be in the airport at 4am.

Just packed 60 hardcovers and 30 limited editions for a total of over 50kg, ready to go to APE. We'll be at Allen Spiegel Fina Arts booth #318.

They are just wonderfull !!!

Everything is fine except the slipcase which was not yet ready. The few limited editions we will offer on sale there will be sold without slipcase, which will be sent afterwards to the owners address (it's cheaper then sending a 600gr book from Belgium).

We'll also offer the possibility to pre-order the book in case all the books are sold out (which we all hope).

I'm going to bed now for a short sleep, and hope to see you at APE !!!

The first books are coming back from the binder. I've not seen them yet (they're back at the printer as we still need to cut the jackets and get the sizing right for the slipcase), but apparently they look great.

First thing in the morning I'm jumping into my car to see them !!!

Getting closer...

Just to post some pictures of a mock-up with the final jacket. Notice the glossy finish over the middle square on the front and the hand on the back ? Hard to see on picture, but very nice when you see it live.

The pages are with the binder, and the book should be ready next wednesday/thursday. Still need to get all flaps wrapped around the hardcover version, get the ex-libris into the limited edition and into the slipcase and hopefully get it all together for my plane to San Fransisco Friday morning !!!

The prefect print

Today we printed the all the interior pages of "Life After Black". Ten hours permanent reviewing of test prints with the originals, adjusting and re-adjusting till we were happy that the printed version was as close as technically possible to the original.

Personally I believe that the team at the printer did a fantastic job, but I will let you - future reader - be the final judge.

Tomorrow, we print the covers and the dustjacket and then she (A Journal handled by Barron must be female) is off to the binder...

Start Printing !!!

The date is set !!! Wednesday 28th of March 2007 will see the birth of the new Journal by Barron Storey.

All the interior art will be printed on that date, give it a couple of extra days to get the binding right and to assemble the slipcases, and we should be ready for APE in San Francisco on April 21-22 !!!

The set of 6 luxury prints (limited to 70 sets) is already on it's way to Barron for signing and should also be available at APE.

Finally, almost a year after this project started the baby will be born !!!

Looking forward to feel it physically in my hands.

Once we have a complete set including the cover, I'll post some pictures on the blog.

The book is now completely scanned, and we're working further on the Lay-out. Barron's been designing further the wrap-around cover and the cover for the limited edition. Kent's working on an introduction and I'm trying to get it all together in time !!!

In the mean time we've also decided on the prices for the different editions.

Shop price for the hardcover will be $49, but can be bought straight from Barron for $39. The limited signed slipcase edition will be sold for $129 only straight from Barron, not available in the shops.

Catching up... visit to Jeff Jones - dinner with Michael Golden

Just a quick one to keep you up to date

Last Saturday finally managed to meet one of my favourite artists Jeff Jones. Drove up early in the morning to his place North of New York and arrived at 9.00 am.

After a bit of searching finally found the appartment of Catherine (the artists formely know as Jeff Jones - inside joke from Jeff himself).

Honesty obliges me to inform you that Catherine is still struggling with the aftermath of her depression and has to cope on a regular basis with anxiety attacks. So please do not ask me for her address - I'll keep it a trade secret.

Introduced Catherine to the work of Belgian painter Leon Spilliaert http://www.expo-spilliaert.be/en/bing2.asp via the book of the exibition which currently runs in Brussels. After that Catherine showed me the work she's recently finished (Wading - see picture + currently on ebay http://tinyurl.com/ydnn93 )

It's one of the few recent paintings with a human figure predominantly on the canvas. Catherine explained that she still feels pretty unsure to paint the human form, and prefers to stick to landscapes at this point in time. But for sure this painting is a hopefull indication of things to come. (I noticed a couple of empty canvasses some of them already off larger dimension)

I really hope she'll beat her demons and finds back the confidence of the past. But for sure it's looking good. Thank you Catherine for your hospitality, it was a pleasure meeting you.

After my visit to Jones, went back to New York for some early Christmas shopping and dinner with Renee & Michael Golden. Next to discussing some topics regarding the upcoming show. Needless to say that the dinner and the Bourbon afterwards were big fun :)

Ready to go...

Last day in San Fransisco,

Will miss it after almost 3 weeks.

Today was Thanksgiving, so almost everything was closed, except Chinatown. Did some last minute shopping for the family.

At noon I went together with Barron to Twin Peaks (no not the location of the movie) to have a magnificent view on San Fransisco and the environment. I'll post pictures later.

Afterwards had a superb Chinese dinner with Barron and Petra. Thx to both of you for the fantastic hosts you were during my stay.

In th evening, I went to see "the Fountain". http://thefountainmovie.warnerbros.com/

Just wonderfull movie, a real must see picture. A lot of the Graphic Novel by Kent Williams is intergrated in the film, a lot of Barron's influence can be seen "Finish it" being the most obvious one.

Tomorrow off to New York Again.

New York New York !!!

What a day !!! and what a night !!!

Packed like sardines in a can, flew overnight from San Fransisco to New York. Did not close an eye and arrived without sleep 6.40am at JFK.

Went straight to the Club Quarter hotel downdown near Wall street and I got a penthouse on the 21st floor !!! Expected to have a great view of the city... but when I looked outside, only saw higher skyscapers...

Took a shower, quick breakfast and went of to visit Michael Kaluta. http://www.kaluta.com/index.php3

Super experience !!! Very warm welcome by an awesome artist. He lives 5 high in a beautyfull appartment without an elevator. Keeps him fit.

Michael's studio still looks like on this picture. Very dense with lot's of material for inspiration.

Michael showed me an avalanche of art, both recent as "Studio" stuff. Just too nice to describe. So I've just put a couple of pictures in this blog.

The "Metropolis" piece on top has found a new owner - me !!!

You've no idea how happy I am. Thanks a lot Michael !!!

I've also bought some more recent pieces but that will be posted later on my CAF gallery.

Michael also showed me the "Stealer of Souls" piece - a real stunner !!!

I'm certainly going back to visit Michael... or maybe, he'll come over to Belgium, as he agreed to participate in the Graphic Novel Art 2007 show !!!

After the visit to Michael, I went to the NY Big Apple con http://www.bigapplecon.com/index.htm . Was my first US comics convention, and have to say that the atmosphere was very particular :)

I Managed to meet Michael Golden, http://lambiek.net/artists/g/golden_michael.htm, who also agreed to come to Belgium !!! It's starting to look good.

After the convention, a quick nap and then back into town to meet Ted McKeever (and lovely wife) and Kasra Ghanbari. A nice diner at "Empires dinner" and a long walk throughout New York by night. Ted was the perfect guide. Thx a lot Ted !!! Hope to see you and your family soon again.

No did not see Neil Gaiman, but had a great time with Brian from Anno Domino. Discussed potential distribution possibilities for Barron's book. And it's looking good.

Had dinner with Barron, and great phylosofical discussions on the way back to San Fransisco. Kept us both awake. Very tired today, so the blog will be short...

So this is it, the first one, the first time, the time to remember when you did it for the first time...

Got my Blog up and (hopefully) running !!!

With a bit of luck this will be my ideal tool to keep you updated on the projects I'm working on, and which may be of interest to you.

Currently at the other side of the world, San-Fransisco for a three weeks job with Levi's.

Great place to be, great people and the weather is superb !!!

Last weekend rented a PT Cruiser convertible to drive from San Fransisco to Los Angeles anlong Highway Nr 1. Great drive.

Visited Allen Spiegel on the way up. He's the publisher all Dave McKean artbooks, and represents a couple a super talented artists such as Kent Williams, JJ Muth, Phil Hale, ... to name a few. You can visit his site on http://www.asfa.biz/

On Sunday morning visited Kent Williams to talk about his art, the show we did last summer and advice on the publication of Barron Storey's journal #45 "Life After Black". Was great to meet Kent, he looked super energised after the work he has done for the Fountain together with Darren Arnofsky.

And yes, how can you resist when Kent opens his cupboard with nice art !!!

Kent also promised to help Barron and me out on the publication of the journal. Feel very happy to have a "pro" watching over my shoulder.

In the afternoon, I went for a suprise visit to Ashley Wood. After the initial shock, I had a warm welcome by the Australian Pop-Bot artist.

We talked a lot about his art and the effort he put's into it. We also finally resolved a 2 your trade (a Kent Williams piece for one of his painting) and look forward to have the finished cover of Zombies vs Robots II over in Belgium.

It was worth the detour and the 9 hr drive back to San Fransisco

Yesterday 14th of november, went in the evening to a signing session with Joann Sfar. Yes quite incredible to meet a French comic artists here in the States. Instead of the long cues in France, there were maybe only 5 people, So plenty of time to talk. Nice chap, very funny and a great storyteller (like his books). Unfortunately he does not sell any original art :(

But managed to sneak out one of his drawings he made on the spot. Never for sale however, as this would be against Joann's principles, and I prefer to stay friends with my artists.

Tomorrow looking forward to join Barron in meeting Brian & Cherry from Anno Domini Gallery http://www.galleryad.com/ , the official art representatives of Barron. We'll be talking about the distribution of Barron's book.

In the evening we'll try to meet up with Neil Gaiman who's giving a lecture overhere http://www.litart.org/gaiman.htm with a bit of luck (and with Barron's help) we might be able to ask his support for "Life after Black".
